Force Cancer Charity
Force is a Devon based charity committed to people whose lives are affected by cancer. Originally set up in 1987 to fund local cancer research, the Charity has expanded to serve the rapidly changing world of cancer services at a local level. Why local Simply because anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and professional support close to home.
In September 2004 FORCE opened a purpose built cancer support centre in the grounds of the RD&E Hospital. The Centre is open five days a week and offers a whole range of non-clinical cancer support services. Despite moving into supportive care, research remains a very important part of our work. FORCE funded research is now carried out by the Peninsula Medical School and the Charity has recently agree to fund two more studentships at a cost of £135,000 over three years. FORCE funded research is currently focussed on lung and ovarian cancers.
Apart from research and support for patients and their families, FORCE has helped fund a new generation of equipment. Anyone treated for cancer locally is likely to benefit from equipment provided by the Charity at a total cost of over £2 million.
None of the above would be possible without the huge amount of support we receive from local people. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers of the Great West Run for selecting FORCE as one of their chosen charities and to also thank our runners for helping to raise much needed funds to continue our work.

ELF
Our vision is to support the excellent work of the Haematology Centre based at the RD&E Hospital, for the benefit of patients in Devon and beyond. The ultimate vision is to try and help make leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood disorders history across the South West.
History of the Charity.
ELF has been in existence for over 20 years. It has grown from humble beginnings into a well recognised and respected South West charity. Over £4 million has been raised to provide funds for enhanced patient care, state of the art equipment and research at the Haematology Centre which opened in 2003. ELF contributed £1.6 million towards the cost of building the Centre and it has treated many thousands of patients.
2009 saw the commencement of the "ELF Physical Well Being Programme", with Wii games consoles and exercise bikes already purchased. The programme is aimed at helping patients’ physical and mental recovery and has already received positive feedback. Money raised will help this patient care objective along with research and equipment.

Our Patron is Steve Rider, Senior ITV Sports Presenter and is supported by Sir John Evans, Jo Pavey and David FitzGerald as Vice Patrons.
Steve got involved with ELF due to his brother; "It was my brother's cancer in the late nineties that brought me into contact with ELF. His long-term requirements mean that ELF has become a vital part of his life. It is the same for so many individuals across the South West. I encourage you to run for ELF in the Great West Run."

EDP Drug & Alcohol Services
EDP Drug & Alcohol Services is a locally based charity working with people with drug & alcohol problems in communities and prisons across Devon & Dorset. EDP aims to reduce the harm caused by drug and alcohol use, not just individuals but to their families and communities.
It isn?t easy to raise money for people with drug and alcohol problems but if you know people who have been affected, you will know how much support is needed.
Last year we used the money raised from the Great West Run to fund activities for people on our group programmes. These activities support people as they make changes, to integrate back into their communities. One of our runners last year had completed the programme and has now successfully gained full time employment.
We are very grateful to the organisers of the Great West Run for choosing us as one of the official charities. If you think you can help in any way please contact Cheryl Greenslade on 01392 666713.
If you know anyone in Exeter is affected by drug use, they can phone 0845 371 9988. For numbers of our other services, see our website
Hospiscare
"When your life changes, what Hospiscare does is help you find another part of you to cope. It's not about dying, it's about living."
Hospiscare is the only local charity caring for the terminally ill in Exeter, mid and east Devon. We give specialist end-of-life care to patients in their own homes, in the hospice, in our day care centres and at the RD&E Wonford Hospital. Our holistic approach encompasses the physical, emotional and social needs of the patient and we support their family and loved ones through the most difficult time of life.
We are delighted to be one of the Great West Run 2010 charities. The money raised will ensure that our nurses are there for local people facing a terminal illness, giving them hope and comfort in the last few days and months of life. Thank you for helping us to keep caring and for supporting your local Hospice nurses.
